We are now taking reservations for the 2009-10 school year's "Passport to Egypt"! Curriculum is available for K-5. Call 332-6404 today to set up your visit.
This year, The Global Corner presents our "Passport to Egypt" for students in grades K-5. The activities this year are:
- Writing: Students will learn about the history of writing in Egypt – including the importance of scribes in ancient days. K-2 students will learn to write their numbers like Egyptian children do. They will learn several letters in contemporary Arabic writing. 3-5 students will learn about hieroglyphs and how the Rosetta Stone led to our understanding of their meaning. All students will take home a hieroglyphics key to allow them to use this ancient alphabet.
- Music & Dance: Students will listen to Egyptian music and learn about a variety of musical instruments. They will create basic musical rhythms and use finger cymbals to create music. They will learn basic dance steps and then watch a video of professional Egyptian dancers.
- Contemporary Egyptian Culture: Students will learn to find Egypt on a globe, and will learn about its geographic features. K-2 students will hear a story about a young boy in Cairo. As the story progresses, they will learn many details of Egyptian culture. 3-5 students will take a virtual trip to Egypt and visit Cairo, where they will meet with a local family and learn what life is like for children Yasmine and Achmed. Students will create a postcard of their "travels" to send home.
- Ancient Egypt: Students will learn about what life was like in Egypt 5000 years ago. They will create a timeline to try to understand how long ago that was. They will learn about pharaohs and pyramids, and discover what children did all day in those days. 3-5 students will also learn about the importance of mummification in ancient times.
- Egyptian Art: Students will learn about art in both ancient and modern times. K-2 students will learn their color and shape words in Arabic. They will learn about Islamic geometric patterns that are popular in Egypt today, and will have an opportunity to color a pattern. 3-5 students will learn about art in ancient times and will have an opportunity to take a drawing based on ancient Egyptian artistic rules and create a self-portrait.
The adventure begins even before your day with The Global Corner. Once you have reserved a date for your visit, we will work with you to ensure our curriculum meets your needs. Our curriculum is designed to help you meet the Florida Sunshine Standards and Grade Level Expectations. Our pre-visit interview will also allow us to become familiar with your classroom layout, the number of children and classes, the special needs of your students, and anything else that will ensure that your experience with The Global Corner is one you and your students will remember fondly for years to come.
On the morning of our visit, we will arrive early and set up our activities. The number and type will depend on the number of classrooms participating, the grade level of the students and the amount of time allocated. If an auditorium or cafeteria is available, we will start the program with a single welcome presentation. If not, individual activity teachers will welcome the students by class. During the welcome session, each child will receive a "passport" that will be used throughout the day. Each classroom will be set up for a different activity and the children will visit each in order to experience all the fun. Children will have their "passports" stamped for each activity they visit. Every teacher from The Global Corner will have an assistant, so classroom teachers can feel free to stay with their students and enjoy all the activities with them.
The adventure doesn't end when the visit is over. Classroom teachers will receive ideas and activities to continue to bring the world into the classroom. Our website also provides ideas for teachers, parents and children. And, of course, schools will be invited to future "travels" with The Global Corner.
